How to play back to back, together or apart
In a back-to-back, two DJs share one set. Each of you plays a record, or a few, then hands over, and the set turns into a conversation: your friend leaves you a record and you answer it with the next. Done well, it sounds like one DJ with twice the record collection. Done badly, it sounds like two sets taking turns. Most of the difference is in the handovers.
Pick a format
- One for one. Trade a record each. The most conversation, and the hardest.
- Two for two, or three for three. Room to build a small idea before you hand it over.
- By deck. Each of you keeps a deck for the night.
Agree before you start, and agree how long a turn lasts, so nobody is left waiting.
Leave your partner somewhere to go
The record you finish on is the one your partner has to answer. Hand over somewhere they can work with:
- Hand over with time left. An outro or a long breakdown gives them room to bring something in.
- Don't end your turn on your biggest record unless you've agreed the set peaks there.
- Stay near the tempo you're both playing at, and in a key that leaves them options.
Follow where they're going
The best answer to a record sounds like you heard it. If your partner has been building, keep building. If they've gone deeper, follow them down before you change direction. Pull your next records while theirs plays, not when your turn starts.
Keep the blends clean
Agree who handles the mixer during a blend. When two people reach for the same EQ, the mix sounds like it. A simple rule: the DJ bringing a record in does the blend, and the other keeps their hands off until it's done.
When you're two places apart
You can't lean over to see their screen or catch their eye before a drop, so the tools have to show you what standing side by side would. In Mix//Sync:
- Both decks on both screens. You see their waveform, where their record is and how long is left.
- Their sound, live. Their decks reach you as they play them, in time with yours in your ears.
- A shared beat. Press SYNC and your record takes the tempo of the one that's playing and comes in beat-locked.
- Records that answer theirs. Under your partner's deck, Fits with shows records from your own library that fit the one they're playing.
- A private list. Add records to Next up while they play. Your partner never sees it.
- Chat between transitions. Type in the chat beside the library, and leave it alone during a blend.
Record it
Either of you can record the whole set, both sides of it, and the Set so far tab lists who played each record, and Copy tracklist gives you the times, artists and titles to keep with the mix.
