Mix//Sync

How to DJ with a friend online

You and a friend want to play together, but you're not in the same room. Maybe you used to play every weekend, and now you live in different cities. To mix together rather than take turns, you each need both decks on your screen, your own music, and the other's sound live. Here's what that takes, and the simplest way to do it.

What most people try first

A video call with one person streaming their output. Screen sharing. Taking turns recording separate sets and stitching them together later. These work for listening, but they don't work for mixing: you can't blend into your friend's track if you only hear it through a call, late and compressed. Ways to DJ together from two places goes through each one.

What you actually need

What each of you brings

A laptop or desktop with your music on it, Chrome or Safari, headphones or speakers, and a steady internet connection. If your Wi-Fi tends to drop out, a cable is steadier.

How it goes in Mix//Sync

  1. Open a session in your browser and load your music.
  2. Send your friend the link. The two of you share two decks and one mixer.
  3. Decide who starts. While one of you plays, the other loads the next record on the other deck and brings it in on the fader.
  4. Press Rec when you're ready. Either of you can record the whole thing.

Ways to split it

A few habits that help

Agree on a rough direction before you start: an opener, a build, where it peaks. Keep your channel levels even so neither side is louder. Use the chat between transitions and leave it alone during them.

Make it a regular night

A night every week or two works better than waiting for the perfect evening. Pick a theme, take turns choosing the opener, and keep the recordings. In a few months you'll have a run of mixes you made together.
