Mix//Sync

How to record a DJ mix in your browser

You don't need to install DJ software to record a mix. Mix//Sync runs in your browser: two decks, a mixer, your own music and a record button. Record on your own, or back-to-back with a friend on another computer.

Before you start

Your music as files on your computer (MP3, WAV, FLAC, AAC, OGG or M4A), or your Rekordbox collection exported as XML, and a laptop or desktop computer. See What you need.

Record it

  1. Open Mix//Sync and press Start a mix.
  2. Press Add my music at the bottom of the library and add your folder or your Rekordbox export.
  3. Load a record on each deck.
  4. Press Rec at the top of the screen.
  5. Play your set.
  6. Press Rec again to stop.

Press Rec before the music

If nothing is playing yet, Rec waits: its dot blinks red, and recording starts the moment the music does. Press it again to cancel, and nothing is left behind. If music is already playing, recording starts straight away.

Once an armed take has started, it stops itself if everything stays quiet for five minutes. A take you started with music playing only stops when you stop it.

Your take is safe while you play

The take is written to your computer as it records, not only when you stop. If the tab closes or the browser crashes, it's still there the next time you open Mix//Sync. If you try to close the tab while recording, your browser asks first. Mix//Sync's own Leave button stops the take and keeps it on this computer before you go.

If you come back to a take you haven't saved, it waits on your home page with a Save button.

When you stop

A Recording finished card appears in the corner, out of the way of the decks. Give the mix a Name, add who played under DJ / artists, and check the Time of mix. Then press Download to save it as an MP3, or press Delete twice to throw it away. The card stays until you choose one.

Recording a back-to-back

With a friend in your session, a recording captures the whole mix as you heard it: your decks and theirs. Rec records on your own computer, so if you both want a copy, both of you press it.

Later

Your recordings are listed on your home page, and your newest one plays back right there, with the tracks you played. From the home page you can download the mix as an MP3.

A few habits that help

Before you start, play both records and listen: if one is louder, turn its TRIM down so the two sit at the same level. In Private Browsing, recordings aren't kept when the tab closes, so download the take before you close it.
