How to record a back-to-back mix online
Recording a back-to-back used to mean one person holding the recorder and the other hoping it came out. With your friend in another place, the questions change: whose computer records, what does the file hold, and how do you both get a copy? In Mix//Sync, each of you can press Rec and get the whole mix, both sides, on your own computer. Here's how it works.
Whose computer records
Rec records on the computer of the DJ who presses it. If you both want a copy, both of you press it. Each copy is the whole mix: your decks and your partner's, together in one file.
Who should press it
Agree before you start. The simplest rule is that you both press it. If one computer has a problem halfway through, the other copy is still there.
Both names, and the tracklist
When you stop, the Recording finished card fills in DJ / artists with both your names, as one name "b2b" the other, in alphabetical order, so both copies are credited the same way. Change it if you like.
Every record that starts during the take is kept with it, yours and your partner's. Your newest take plays back on your home page with the tracks you both played.
During the session, the Set so far tab lists every record either of you plays, in order, with the time it started and who played it. Press Copy tracklist to get it as plain lines of time, artist and title, ready to keep with the mix. Copy it before you close the tab: the list lives only there.
Before you hit record
- Listen to the levels on both sides and turn TRIM down on any record that's louder, so one DJ isn't louder than the other. The mixer is shared, so either of you can set either channel.
- Agree who plays the first record, how you'll trade, and how you'll finish.
- Press Rec before the first record. It waits for the music, so nothing is lost at the top.
- Leave a few seconds of the first record playing before the first blend.
If the connection drops
If your partner drops out, your recording keeps going on your side without a gap, and your decks keep playing. When they come back, they rejoin the same session, and the mix carries on.
After the mix
Each of you downloads your own copy as an MP3, from the card or from your home page. Until you do, a take lives only in the browser it was recorded in. Then listen back the next day: the transitions that felt rushed in the moment usually sound fine, and you'll hear what to try next time.
