How DJs structure a set

A good mix goes somewhere. It isn't one track after another: it has a shape you can feel even if you couldn't draw it. Most DJs start from the same arc: a warm-up, a build, a peak and a comedown. Here's that shape, and how to build your own, whether it's a mix you're recording or a night playing with a friend.

The classic arc

  1. The warm-up. Lower energy, space to settle in. Records that set a mood without asking for too much.
  2. The build. Energy climbs. Grooves get deeper, then start to lift.
  3. The peak. The records you've been saving.
  4. The comedown. Bring it home, with something worth ending on.

Waves, not a straight line

A set that only climbs gets tiring, even at the top. Inside the big arc, good sets move in waves: a run of records that builds, a deeper one to breathe, then a bigger climb. The dips are what make the peaks feel high.

Plan with energy, not genre

Two records from the same genre can sit at very different energy, and two from different genres can sit side by side. Sort your records by how hard they push first, and the shape is easier to see. Then use genre and sound for color within each stretch.

Move the tempo slowly

Most sets drift in tempo rather than jump: a couple of BPM every few records is easy to follow. Starting a little slower than where you'll peak leaves you room to climb. A big tempo change works best across a breakdown or a clean stop.

Move the key on purpose

Staying in keys that sit together keeps the blends smooth. Stepping around the key wheel over a stretch of records can lift a set without one loud record in it.

How long, and how many

At four to six minutes a record, an hour holds roughly ten to fifteen. A recorded mix has to catch the listener in the first few minutes. A long night with a friend can take its time getting going.

Leave room

A plan is a direction, not a script. Pull more records than you need for each stretch, so you can follow where the mix goes. The best moment in a set is often the record you didn't plan.
